The exterior of the Theatrical Outfit
The country’s first green certified theater is named for the lead donors and the rehabilitated historic building that it occupies. The building features bicycle storage and shower and changing facilities for bicycle commuters. A 5,250-gallon tank stores rainwater for use in flushing toilets. This system reduces roof runoff by almost 90%. The collected water is used to flush toilets. Another water saving technique includes the usage of waterless urinals, low-flow showerheads, and sensor-controlled faucets.
The project was also designed to use more than 25% less energy than a comparable structure. To save energy, the roof was insulated, new windows were put in, and electric lighting became efficient. The building envelope also features high-efficiency glazing. An innovative HVAC system measures the amount of carbon dioxide expelled by the audience and brings in more fresh air. All materials used were low-emitting, recycled content, and local. More than 75% of the construction waste, by weight, was diverted from the landfill. Even the carpet in the lobby and main theater is made from recycled glass .
